14,000 pounds of ground beef recalled in 10 states due to E. coli – National working moms | Examiner.com

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced thousands of pounds of ground beef products are being recalled due to the possibility of E. coli 0147:H7 contamination.  According to the FSIS press release issued March 8, 2011, the Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef is recalling more than 14,000 pounds of ground beef products including:

  • Approx. 40-pound cases of “BEEF FINE GRIND 81/19 NATURAL,” containing 10-pound chubs with identifying product code of “80185.”
  • Approx. 40-pound cases of “BEEF CHUCK FINE GRIND 81/19 NATURAL,” containing 10-pound chubs with identifying product code of “80285.”
  • Approx. 40-pound cases of “BEEF SIRLOIN FINE GRIND 91/9 NATURAL,” containing 10-pound chubs with product code of “80495.”
  • Approx. 40-pound cases of “BEEF FINE GRIND 90/10 NATURAL,” containing 5-pound chubs with product code of “85165.”
  • Approx. 60-pound cases of “BEEF FINE GROUND 93/7,” containing 10-pound chubs with product code of “86191.”

Each case label bears the establishment number “EST. 27” inside the USDA mark.

Products involved in the recall were produced on February 22, 2011.  Because the products were shipped to Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, North Caroline, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington, the items may have been repackaged and sold under different brand names.  FSIS will post the retail distribution listings when they are available.

Lab results confirmed a positive test for E. coli, a potentially deadly bacterium.  No reports of illness have been reported. According to FSIS, the only way to ensure ground beef is cooked to a high enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria is to measure the internal temperature of the product.
